Yes, this is an oldie but a goodie. From 1989, Canadian writer Evelyn Lau released her diary which documents her time as a teenage runaway who escaped into the depths of the Downtown Eastside, Vancouver’s roughest and toughest neighbourhood, even to this day in the face of gentrification it still holds strong. Back in the 80s and 90s though, it was once given the honour of having the highest HIV infection rate in all of North America, due to the copious amounts of injection drug users. To live and make it in the Downtown Eastside can be a struggle, can be tough, but can be done.
In Runaway, Lau shows the world how she managed to get by: through prostitution, drugs, and ultimately, writing.
