When I’m working at the public library and have to fill the biography display, I often try to put this one out for people to grab. It is a fantastic read! Some people may know of author Elaine Lui as Lainey, the sharp-witted gossip girl with the inside scoop on her popular celebrity gossip blog LaineyGossip. She is also one of the hosts on the show The Social, Canada’s kinder and friendlier version of The View. On the program, Lainey is the shameless one, the one who isn’t afraid to call things like it is, the one who is open about not wanting children, the one who is totally over pregnant people who belly-cup.
She doesn’t back down from pulling any punches in her book, either. This sort-of memoir is more an ode to her mother, nicknamed the “Squawking Chicken.” It tells the story of her childhood, her ability to overcome hardships and struggle, and her unique parenting style and the effect it’s had on our beloved author. Funny and poignant, there are also feng shui tips and superstitions that I am now conscientiously adhering to, this book is an entertaining, informative, and quick fun read.
