Alex Gino’s book George is the story of a young trans child who knows in her heart that she is a girl and not a boy. It’s a perfectly wonderful story that touches upon perhaps a controversial issue for some, but does it in a way that anyone can relate to it. Being bullied, feeling different, these are common experiences among many kids. Of course, being a trans kid has many more levels to it but that commonality that a reader can relate to is the perfect doorway into another world where we can learn more about other people’s lives and experiences.

Gino recently won the Children’s Stonewall Award at the American Library Association. Check out their website to read their speech!
