Here Comes The Sun

Hey Appleberry,

I adored this book. I read it in like 3 days because I couldn’t put it down. Set in Jamaica, it focuses on strong female characters including a mother who will do what it takes to earn money to help get her family out of the slums, an older sister who is equally as driven and who trades in her body in order to help pay for her younger sister’s education so that they might all escape the life they are stuck in, a lesbian neighbour who has returned to stand up against a village who shuns her, and the younger sister on whom everyone’s hopes have been pinned and who only wishes for herself to be more light skinned than she is.

It was an excellent page turner, depressing at times, but the characters are all so fleshed out. The dialogue is written in Jamaican dialect (Patois) and at first I thought I wasn’t going to like it, but I did get used to it and ultimately the story is what kept me going.
