Washington Black

It’s been awhile since I’ve blogged on here! I was busy being a part of a committee and most of my reading was dictated to me, but now that I’m done, I can get back to reading for pleasure and one of the first book I picked up was Esi Edugyan’s Washington Black, winner of the Giller Prize!

I was not a huge fan of her other book, Half-Blood Blues, which also won the Giller. In fact, I couldn’t finish it. But with Washington Black, I could not put it down. It’s the story of a slave who gets taken under the wing of an eccentric scientist. From there, the life of Washington Black unfurls before us.

It’s an epic saga that takes the reader from Barbados to America to Northern Canada to England and to Africa. It’s a journey that will have you rooting for Washington all the way.
