I first read Kai Cheng Thom’s poetry collection about a year or so ago and loved all her writing immediately. That’s why I was so excited to hear that she had a new memoir out.
It’s not QUITE a memoir, however. I looked at the categorization of the book in the library and it’s listed as under fiction. Turns out, this is Thom’s version of a memoir, a magic realism take on the traditional trans books that have come out. She didn’t want to tell the usual story of heartache and struggle and waiting around for a prince to rescue her, so instead she took things into her own hands and crafted characters who fend for themselves and who may or may not rely on a little magic along the way.
